The Uniqueness of Dry-Type Rectifier Transformer

A dry-type rectifier transformer is a specialized transformer designed for rectifier systems. It integrates both transformer and rectifier components within a single unit. First, it converts input AC power into AC power with a suitable voltage through electromagnetic induction, and then outputs DC power via the rectifier elements.

Compared to traditional transformers, it handles complex and variable load conditions effectively, ensuring stable and reliable DC output. It is widely used in industrial sectors such as chemical manufacturing and metallurgy, where stable power supply is crucial.

Since it uses dry insulation technology, it requires neither insulating oil for cooling nor insulation, significantly reducing fire risks and improving safety.

Dry-Type Rectifier Transformer vs. Oil-Immersed Transformer

The oil-immersed transformer is a conventional type widely used in various power systems. It dissipates heat through insulating oil, which transfers heat from the coil and core to the cooling medium.

Thanks to the excellent heat dissipation and insulation properties of insulating oil, oil-immersed transformers can operate in high-capacity and high-voltage environments, commonly in the backbone networks of power transmission and distribution. However, oil leakage poses environmental pollution risks and fire hazards, endangering equipment and personnel safety.

In contrast, dry-type rectifier transformers, though having relatively lower heat dissipation efficiency, can operate stably in well-ventilated environments without relying on insulating oil. They are ideal for applications requiring high safety and environmental protection, such as urban substations and high-rise building distribution systems.

Maintenance also differs significantly. Oil-immersed transformers require regular checks on oil quality, quantity, temperature, and levels, making maintenance complex. Dry-type rectifier transformers avoid oil-related issues; routine maintenance involves inspecting windings, cores, and electrical components, simplifying upkeep and reducing costs and downtime.

Dry-Type Rectifier Transformer vs. Ordinary Dry-Type Transformer

Ordinary dry-type transformers primarily perform voltage conversion, supplying suitable AC power for electrical equipment. They are commonly used in local lighting and electronic circuits.

While ordinary dry-type transformers focus solely on voltage conversion, dry-type rectifier transformers also integrate rectification functions, delivering DC power to meet industrial production and equipment needs.

From a design perspective, ordinary dry-type transformers optimize electromagnetic induction to minimize hysteresis and eddy current losses. In contrast, dry-type rectifier transformers must also consider rectifier components and mitigate harmonics generated during rectification. They often incorporate special winding structures and materials to enhance harmonic resistance.

Dry-Type Rectifier Transformer vs. Autotransformer

An autotransformer features electrically connected primary and secondary windings, transmitting energy partly through electromagnetic induction and partly through direct conduction. This design makes autotransformers highly efficient, especially when the voltage transformation ratio is close to one, and they are also compact, lightweight, and cost-effective.

However, due to the lack of electrical isolation between primary and secondary sides, autotransformers are unsuitable for applications requiring strict isolation.

Dry-type rectifier transformers provide complete electrical isolation between input and output through electromagnetic induction. This isolates the DC and AC sides, ensuring a safer operating environment. Thus, they are the preferred choice in applications demanding strict isolation, such as power supplies for precision electronic equipment and medical devices.
